Request permission to unmute attendees in a Zoom meeting

Request permission to unmute attendees in a Zoom meeting

Zoom offers the option for hosts to request and be granted permission to mute and unmute attendees when they join a meeting for which this option has been enabled.  This permission, once granted, remains in effect between that host and attendee for all future meetings until revoked by the attendee (see "Revoking unmute permission" below)

How it works

-> Enable the feature in your profile

-> Turn on the option meeting-by-meeting

-> Attendee grants permission when joining that meeting.  If the attendee does not, they can at any point leave and re-join the meeting, whereupon they will be given the choice again

-> Permission remains in force per attendee for that host until revoked, regardless of whether the                   feature is turned on in subsequent meetings

How to do it

  • You must first sign in to your Zoom profile (sierracanyonschool.zoom.us) and enable the feature.  The option is listed under Personal/Settings/Meeting/In Meeting (Advanced):

  • Next, turn the option on per-meeting in the Advanced Options when scheduling a meeting (“Schedule” in the Zoom Desktop app):

  • When attendees join that meeting, they will be asked if they want to give permission to be muted/unmuted.

  • If the attendee clicks "Allow," permission is granted and they enter the meeting.  They can now be muted and unmuted at will by the host. If the attendee clicks “Don’t Allow,” they can at any point leave and rejoin the meeting, whereupon they will be asked again.  Attendees will receive a notification on their screen each time they are muted or unmuted by the host.

Revoking unmute permission

  • To revoke permission to be unmuted by a host, click your initials (or profile pic) in the upper-right corner of the Zoom app home screen and select Settings
